History and Need for Home Schooling
Regina Caeli Academy was started over 10 years ago by a Catholic Home schooling
Mother who found there was a need to support other Catholics who wanted to home
school.  The school has transferred twice to other Directors and today continues to
offer services and support for home schoolers. Regina Caeli Academy is one of
many private P
rivate School Satellite Programs that exist in San Diego County.
Regina Caeli Academy chooses to not be an accredited High School, primarily
because parents determine the curriculum for their children during the high school
years.  But many graduates from Regina Caeli Academy have gone on to colleges to
include:
Benedictine College, Cal Poly, Christendom College,  John Paul II Catholic
University, and local community colleges. Many colleges actively pursue home
school graduates.
Why Home Schooling?
How did Regina Caeli Academy started?
Reading scripture in Deuteronomy 11:18-19 we are asked by the Lord to
follow His commandments and He says, "You shall therefore lay up these
words of mine in your heart and in your soul; and you shall bind them as a
sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.  And
you shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are
sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when
you lie down, and when you rise."  While Home schooling our children, we
have plenty of opportunities to do what we are asked to do.  If our children
are spending 6-8 hours a day in a secular educational institution, then they are
learning the ways of the world rather then the ways of the Lord.

Catechism of the Catholic Church 1653 says "The fruitfulness of conjugal
love extends to the fruits of the moral, spiritual, and supernatural life that
parents hand on to their children by education.  Parents are the principal and
first educators of their children."

Catechism of the Catholic Church 2223 says "Parents have the first
responsibility for the education of their children.  They bear witness to this
responsibility first by creating a home where tenderness, forgiveness, respect,
fidelity, and disinterested service are the rule.  The home is well suited for
education in the virtues."

Saint Paul says in Ephesians 6:4 "Fathers, do not provoke your children to
anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Benefits of Independent Home Schooling with Regina Caeli Academy ISP
1.  Values and Spiritual Influence from the Home

Current public/charter schools may teach about character virtues, but will leave out
the spiritual dimension.  At home and through teaching materials, a Mother or Father
can teach their children their faith principles and values that they possess.  It is hard
to do this when the child is spending most of his/her day surrounded by peers and
teachers who most likely have different faith principles and values than the parent.

2.  Unique Learning Styles of Our Children

Every child is unique and has a different learning style that enables them to learn in
the most optimal manner.  Private and public schools cannot address all the unique
learning styles of all children.  At home, parents have the ability to hand tailor the
learning environment and curriculum to best suit their children.  Students with
special gifts won't fit the mold of most schools. Children with special needs or
special God given talents will flourish in a home environment!

3.  Love of Learning

Given the right environment and loving guidance by parents, children will love to
learn and will naturally want to learn.  Children who are learning at home have time
to delve into a topic that interests them.  Besides the basics of reading, writing, and
arithmetic, children may have interests in subjects such as history.  Text books are
limited and mostly boring.  But a historical fiction novel about a period of time in
history is exciting!  Bring history to life, rather than reading boring text books. The
possibilities are endless on how best to learn any subject.

An excellent resource for educating your child at home comes from
Dr. Ruth
Beechick.  She has several books that give insight into how a parent can foster the
love of learning with their own children.  There probably is not just one program that
will fit your child.  Be careful not to just purchase the first program that comes
along.  Take time to read a few of the books recommended on this website and be
sure to explore what Dr. Beechick has to say about educating our children for
eternity and fostering the love of learning.

4.  Teaching When Children are Ready to Learn

Currently the schools are teaching reading at the Kindergarten level.  This is certainly
stressing out many young children and we are seeing many behavior problems as a
result of pushing academics at too early of an age.  Besides not being
developmentally ready to read at age five, children are not physically ready to read at
age five with regards to eye development.  Granted, there will be exceptions, but this
is not the norm.  When a child is ready to learn to read or write naturally, then
teaching them to do so is quite painless and occurs at a much more rapid rate.
Much research has been done on this subject by the
Moore Foundation.  If your
child is crying during reading and writing lessons, and coming home from school
with behavior problems, it may be due to the stress of academics being pushed on
them too early.  According to the Moore research, children become ready for formal
academics between the ages of eight - ten years old.

5.  Developing Good Habits

It is much easier to help our children develop good habits of life and learning when
they are available to our loving discipline throughout the day.  Some good habits that
we can teach or encourage of our children are habits of concentration, attention,
truthfulness, self-control, and unselfishness.  In the home we have the opportunity
to create an environment which feeds the soul and mind.  We know our children
better than any expert and are the best to guide our children on the path to
developing good habits.  A good introduction into the foundations of education and
developing good habits for the home school is
"For The Children's Sake" by
Susan Schaeffer Macaulay.
